New Daily Lotto Draw Launches In South Africa
South Africa’s National Lottery operator Ithuba has launched a new game called Daily Lotto. Described as ‘unique’ among Ithuba’s choice of games, the Daily Lotto jackpot will be won in every draw and there are four different ways to pick up prizes.
How Daily Lotto Will WorkTo play Daily Lotto, you must select five numbers from 1 to 36. Draws take place at 21:00 South Africa Standard Time (SAST) and you must purchase your tickets before the cut-off time at 20:30. It costs R3 per play and you can enter up to ten consecutive draws in advance, either by visiting an authorised retailer or taking part online.
Unlike South Africa’s other lotteries, the top prize is guaranteed to be won every time, even if there are no tickets that match all the numbers. If this happens, the jackpot, which starts at R100,000, will roll down and be shared between players in the Match 4 prize division.
Ithuba ExcitementThe value of the jackpot, and all other prize, will vary from draw to draw and will depend on the number of tickets sold and the number of winners. The first draw took place on Sunday 10th March 2019 and there were no Match 5 winners. The 57 players matching four numbers won R2,006 each.
Speaking about the launch of the game, Ithuba’s Khensani Mabuza, the executive corporate relations executive, said: “Daily Lotto is unique from our other games in many ways. With this game there is no jackpot rollover, every cent of the jackpot will be won and when there is no jackpot winner, the jackpot amount will roll down into the next prize division and be shared among all players four numbers.”
More Choice For PlayersDaily Lotto is the latest in a long line of games to have been introduced by Ithuba, with the aim to generate more excitement and raise more money for charitable causes across the country.
Lotto, Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto 2 - which are all separate from the new Daily Lotto game - are played every Wednesday and Saturday. You can play Powerball and Powerball Plus every Tuesday and Friday, while Pick 3 is a daily game, Rapido is available every few minutes and special National Lottery Raffles are held from time to time throughout the year.
What can I expect to win?Match the numbers you select to the randomly drawn winning numbers, and you win prizes with the South African Daily Lotto. Unlike other games in South Africa, all the prize money has got to be won in each and every draw. That means there’s a big chance you could land your share of the jackpot without the need to match all the numbers.
With the Daily Lotto game, you can win prize money by matching two, three, four or all five of the numbers drawn. This lottery doesn’t have fixed prizes. Rather, the value of the cash award depends on how many tickets are sold for a draw and how many winners there are.
From every R3 spent on a ticket, 50% of that revenue is ploughed into the prize pool. A portion of the pot is then allocated to the four different prize divisions, with the cash split between winners in each division.
All Daily Lotto prizes are pari-mutuel, so there are no fixed payouts. Occasionally, a guaranteed jackpot may be applied, but this will always be announced via official channels.

Chances of winningFor the South African Daily Lotto, there are overall odds of 1 in 7.6 of winning a prize. This lottery game does not have rollovers. That means if nobody matches all 5 balls in a draw, the top prize rolls down to the next tier.
So, if nobody matches 5 balls in a draw, the jackpot rolls down to the next level, where your odds of winning 43.80% of the lottery prize pool for matching 4 numbers is 1 in 2,432 and down it goes through the tiers.
So, if a particular evening’s draw has no Match 4 winners, the prize pool percentage allocated to the division rolls down to the Match 3 category and so on. Should there be no Match 2 winners, and this is extremely unlikely, only then will the money be added to the pot for the next day’s draw.
Winning the Daily Lotto jackpotMatching all 5 numbers drawn on a particular day means you’ve won the jackpot. If there’s more than one winner, you share the prize pool.
If you’re a lucky winner, in any of the tiers, you have 365 days to claim your winnings. Cash winnings of R2,000 or less may be claimed from any of the licensed lottery retailers around the country. If you win between R2,000 and R50,000, you will have to visit a South African post office to claim your prize. If you’re lucky enough to scoop anything over R50,000, you’ll need to make a trip to one of the Ithuba regional offices to claim your winnings.

HistoryThe Daily Lotto is still brand-new on the South African market, with the first draw taking place on Sunday 10 March 2019. The game came about as a decision by Ithuba, the country’s National Lottery company, to introduce an all-new lottery game where top prizes have to be won every day, in every single Daily Lotto draw. There weren’t any Match 5 winners in the Daily Lotto’s very first draw, but 57 lucky players who matched four numbers each walked away with R2,006.
